us and trying to find out where this is exactly, the accident is on 270 spur, between 495 and the merge. so you can see, this is the accident. this is the inner loop heading toward the 270 main lanes, heading up north in maryland. so this is where the big mess is, so long delays will be on the inner loop of the beltway. so let's switch on to the live camera that we have on m-dot to see the backup. as you can see here over the american legion on the left hand side of the screen and the traffic moving toward you, it is barely moving. delays start at 66 up to the spur and continuing on into montgomery county. and we're looking here at old georgetown road. this is one of the alternates we've been telling folks to take and you can see it is backed up there as well. old georgetown road, rockville pike, two main alternates and go into d.c. for some of the other arteries and cut through randolph. but anywhere you go, it will be a big mess so avoid the west side of the beltway toward the 270 spur more now. back to you. >> we just heard from gary that the southbound lanes appear to

a male. they ve not released his name and they havenot told us whether he was driving or a passenger on the bus. but they did tell us they have to notify the famiy. i want to step out of the way, because i want to show y -- i want to show you the hov flyaway because at this point what we know i that this 26 passenger wolfbus, this tour bus, shortly around 4:00 was leaving the d.c. area traveli northbound and somehow someway it left the roadway completely, went airborne, hit the em bankment. at some point after tt it rested on a jersey wall north of the democracy boulevard on northbound 270 here, resng on the jersey wall. earlier we thought it hit cars sp upon impact. it did not happen. there were at least two cars that hit trying to swerve the light st. again, as you mentioned, 12 people taken to the hospital. four of them are in critical condition. wi talked to a woman right after we arrived on the scene here who was travel behd the bus. she became part of the rescue effort. let's take a listen as to what she had to say. >> we had to stop. we were calling 911 and help

. nbc's miguel almaguer is on the scene. miguel, what can you tell us? >> reporter: matt, good morning. at least 75 people were rushed to the hospital overnight, some of them injured critically. we know at least one person is dead, although that number may rise. some 53 homes were completely destroyed. more than 100 others damaged. it's believed the explosion may have been caused by a ruptured gas line. and as one witness said here, they described the scene as "hell on earth." the explosion ripped through san bruno just before 7:00 local time, the dinner hour in this suburb just south of san francisco. a blast so violent, some thought it was an earthquake, or worse, a jetliner crash. it was neither. >> i went out and seen this big fireball. first thing i thought was, oh, god, something went up, and it was intense with flames. >> reporter: a monster, gas-fed fireball with flames shooting as high as 100 feet into the air was burning so hot, it obscured everything around it. asphalt melted, windows shattered, the sky turned black and the sound, what witnesses describe as a roaring and a g

talked with u.s. park police. they say rock creek drive at beach drive is also closed. you know about this. if you are familiar with the area, it is for your commute. and it tends to be one of the first to flood. keep in mind out here on the roadways, areas of standing water, that you are probably going to be familiar with on your commute any too time, you are going to see standing water there as well. be careful. let's take another look at roads -- i'll actually toss it back to you in the studio. >> our other big story a deadly tour bus accident on i-270 in montgomery county is under investigation this morning. some police say the bus veered off a sky ramp and plunged 45 feet for the lanes below. the driver, 66-year-old joseph clabaugh, jr. died at the scene. twelve people were hospitalized, 11 on the bus and one on the ground. the bus was towed tie montgomery county police impound lot for further inspection. the ntsb is also looking into this accident. >>> we are following a double shooting late last night in southeast d.c. this happened on 2 #nd street near savannah street not far
